Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman, a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, following allegations of obstructing government duties and creating chaos at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The arrest was confirmed by DB chief Shafiqul Islam.
Earlier in the day, a case was filed against Akhtaruzzaman at the Airport Police Station by Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib, a security officer at the airport. The charges were lodged under Sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504, and 506 of the Penal Code.
Following the submission of the First Information Report (FIR) on Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir directed the investigating officer to submit the investigation report by November 10. Sub-Inspector (SI) Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station has been assigned to lead the probe.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 10:30 AM on October 1, following the arrival of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 from Madinah. A shortage of luggage trolleys at Belt No. 8 triggered frustration and commotion among arriving passengers.
To manage the situation, Group Captain S.M. Rageeb Samad, Executive Director of the airport, arrived at the scene upon the request of Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain. As he attempted to calm the crowd, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly approached him, verbally abused him, and threatened him with physical assault and expulsion from the airport.
The FIR further detailed that protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman began recording video on their mobile phones within the airport’s Key Point Installation (KPI) restricted area. When Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin asked them to stop filming, Akhtaruzzaman reportedly behaved aggressively, shouted profanities, and physically assaulted him.
The complaint also noted that bottles of Zamzam water collected by other passengers were thrown off trolleys during the altercation, causing property damage. Furthermore, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly adopted a hostile stance toward a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman formally joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, 2025.
